ABOUT THE DAMN YANKEE STRING BAND "Southern-fried and Yankee hard-boiled!" The Damn Yankee String Band consists of Sarah Hotchkiss on fiddle, banjo and vocals, John Mowad on fiddle, guitar, banjo and vocals, and Jen Wells on bass. We play old time mountain music, vintage country and "hillbilly jazz", a hybrid mix of string band, country and swing music, much of it featuring John's tasty guitar pickin' Lately we've added a new genre to our repertoire: R&B (Rhythm & Banjo)! OLD TIME & VINTAGE COUNTRY MUSIC: Even though our repertoire is pretty eclectic, ranging from Central West Virginia mountain music to Jimmy Rogers and from Hank Williams to the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones, we maintain a traditional string band sound by using only acoustic instruments, without pickups (of course we do use microphones), whenever possible. John sometimes supplements his acoustic guitar sound with a magnetic pickup, just enough to allow his leads to cut through the mix, in noisy barroom situations. Either way, it's a great, lively old-time sound! R&B: RHYTHM & BANJO! You heard it here first, folks! Old-Time Rock & Roll, string band style! Traditional OT and blues-rock, with John playing his Epiphonr Joe Pass model hollow-body jazz box at most venues. At really small gigs, he'll stick to straight acoustic guitar, but that doesn't keep us from rockin' out hillbilly-style! We dare ya to stay in your seat!
